Team Stratos won the technology challenge at the Innovation for Defence Drone Hackathon

We joined a Belgian Army drone hackathon for fun and ended up winning the technology challenge with BattAware, an undetectable portable battery warning system for long-range fixed-wing drones.

This weekend, we did a thing. We won the technology challenge at the Innovation for Defence Drone Hackathon, as Team Stratos.

Organised by the Belgian Army, the event brought together 200 participants. We originally joined just for fun (yes, I even baked waffles at night). We ended up building something the drone pilots got genuinely excited about.

BattAware

Our solution: an undetectable, portable, tailored battery warning system for long-range fixed-wing drones. We called it BattAware.

The enthusiasm from the Defence teams (ISTAR and SOR) was real. We're already making arrangements for field tests. That's not something you expect when you sign up for a hackathon for fun.

What's next

We're happy to help Belgian Defence move forward. The field tests will tell us where this goes.

Thanks

To Koen Ceulemans for the organisation, and Belgian Defence and Theo F. Franken for making it possible.

To Team Stratos: Jasper Lammens, Nico Heulsen, Gunter Gielen, Koen Ceulemans, and the Defence staff who made it unforgettable.

And to the many interesting connections made along the way: Julius Davidson, Geert Vanhandenhove, Mikael Shamim, Nick Foulon, Filip Maertens, Koen Van Peteghem, and many more.

Still buzzing.
